Thought For The Week: Friday, 18th June 2021

What did Audre Lorde mean when she said “your silence will not protect you”? What was Audre Lorde not protected from?

Look at the full quote below, how does this make you feel? Does this change your understanding of what she meant?

My silences had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you. But for every real word spoken, for every attempt I had ever made to speak those truths for which I am still seeking, I had made contact with other women while we examined the words to fit a world in which we all believed, bridging our differences. And it was the concern and caring of all those women which gave me strength and enabled me to scrutinise the essentials of my living.

  1. I think that the quote means to stand up for yourself and not let other people treat you badly. If someone was unkind to me I could tell my teachers or parents so that it won’t happen again.

  2. You should speak because if you don’t then you can’t change anything for the better or make our world a nice place to live in.

  3. Your voice is a powerful tool which should be used to share your thoughts and opinions as we are lucky to live in a democracy. How can I or other people try to make our lives better if we don’t speak?

  4. I think Audie Lorde meant that if you are silence you can’t get anything done because when she was silence she didn’t get what she wanted and it took a women’s encouraging words to help her voice come.Thats why I think she wants us to take the message that it’s best to speak up.

  5. I think that she meant that she wasn’t gaining anything by being silent so you should always talk when needed instead of staying quiet.

  6. I think she means stand up for your own self and don’t let anyone bother you because your voice will speak up yourself.

  7. I think she meant that you have to speak up, stand up and toughen up so that you will not let people push you around

  8. I think she meant that if you have a problem and if you keep silent the problem will effect you more and more

  9. I think she meant that if you keep quiet you you can’t protect yourself. I hope you like it bye

  10. I think your silence will not help you because I am stuck with work or do not understand something in class, I will ask Mr Cambridge or Ms Kelly for help. If I didn’t I wouldn’t know how to get better with my learning.

  11. You need to speak about your problems. A problem halved is a problem shared. This is important for mental health and wellbeing.
