We’ve had a great start to our sporting new year in the first few weeks, with a few football matches and a tag-rugby festival.
Our first event was a tag-rugby festival run by Old Whitgiftian’s Rugby Club on 22nd September. This was a great opportunity for children from Years 5 and 6 to have a go at tag-rugby, and they really proved themselves capable. Winning and drawing most of their matches, the children represented Heavers fantastically!
From then onwards, it’s been football, football, football, with three different matches and competitions!
We had the first round of the Croydon Schools FA’s schools cup, which was against our Federation-mates Selsdon Primary. This was a well-fought match on both sides, with Heavers coming out victorious. Goals from Ceren and Bryan secured the victory, with Selsdon only managing to put one goal past goalkeeper Alex.
On Saturday 30th September, our team braved an early Saturday morning to travel to Margaret Roper Primary School for the Croydon Advertiser 5-a-side cup. Our Heavers team played fantastically, however, they were unable to progress beyond the group stages after being placed in a group with the two eventual finalists! Previously untested Harley and Micah played exceptionally well, with the latter netting his first goal for Heavers.
On Monday 3rd October, with all our forward momentum, our hardy team travelled to Ecclesbourne Primary for our first league match of the season. This was an absolutely fantastic performance, with Prince scoring a hat-trick of headers to secure a 3-0 victory. Ceren and Micah had loads more chances, with manager, Mr Samuels at the end commenting “it could have been six nil!”. An extra special mention to Riccardo from Tourmaline Class, who stepped in between the sticks in the absence of regular goalkeeper Alex. What an achievement to keep a clean sheet!
