Transfer from Primary to Secondary School 2015
To parents of children living within the Borough of Croydon and transferring from Primary to Secondary School in September 2015
Parents living outside the Borough of Croydon must contact their own LA for information on how to apply.
Your son/daughter is now about to move into Year 6 of primary education and so will be transferring to secondary school in September 2015. Croydon must receive your application setting out your preferences by the statutory closing date Friday 31 October 2014.
Please note that, unlike previous years, the LA will not distribute copies of the secondary prospectus and the Common Application Form to primary and junior schools to be handed out to parents of year 6 pupils. The prospectus can be viewed online at www.croydon.gov.uk/admissions from August 2014 and a step by step guide on how to apply online (click here), is included in the prospectus.
Croydon strongly recommend that you submit your application online; if you apply by post, please make sure that the Local Authority (LA) receives it by Friday 24 October 2014 which is the Friday before the half-term holiday. The Secondary prospectus which will be available on www.croydon.gov.uk/admissions in August, explains what you need to do and where you can get further information.
The background and full details of secondary schools’ admission arrangements are set out in the prospectus which will be available online: ‘Admissions to Secondary school 2015’. A list of secondary schools, which are located within three miles of Croydon’s boundary, is also included. Before you complete your application for a school place, please take time to read the prospectus so that you can gain a full understanding of the coordinated arrangements for school admission.
We strongly advise that you apply online and a step by step guide on how to apply online is included in the prospectus and is also enclosed with this letter. There are many benefits of using the online application process:
- it is quick and easy and you can complete your application over several sessions
- you can submit your application and make changes to it right up until the closing date.
- you can attach documents to your online application in support of your application i.e. proof of address, medical letters…
- after you have submitted your application you will receive an email confirming receipt and details of your application
- you can see the results of your application from the evening of 2 March 2015 rather than waiting for your letter to arrive in the post
If you do not have a computer at home or do not have internet access, you can use computers at school, Croydon Council libraries and Access Croydon at Bernard Weatherill House, with staff on hand to help. However if you still wish to use the paper application form, please contact the council on 020 8726 6400.
You can apply for up to six maintained schools including all Grammar Schools outside of Croydon and you must list the schools in your order of preference. Please note that some of the schools you apply for may also require the completion of a supplementary information form, which must be returned directly to the schools concerned.
The deadline date for return of your LA application is Friday 31 October 2014. We strongly recommend that you submit your application online. If you apply by post, please make sure that the LA receives it by Friday 24 October 2014 which is the Friday before the half-term holiday. All applications received by 31 October 2014 will be treated as on-time. After this date, unless there is a good reason, applications will be classed as ‘late’ and will only be dealt with after the on-time applications have been processed.
If your child is attending a Croydon primary school and you are applying on a paper form, your form may be returned to your child’s primary school. Independent (fee paying) schools are not included in the above arrangements.
You are advised not to make your application until you have attended the open evenings/days arranged by the secondary schools (open days/evenings timetable is included in the prospectus) and you are sure about the schools you wish to apply to. You must ensure that you submit your LA application and where appropriate, the individual school supplementary forms by the due date(s). If you do not complete both forms where necessary, or if your LA application and/or supplementary forms are late, you are unlikely to receive an offer of a place at your preferred school.
Offers of secondary school places at maintained schools throughout the country will be posted by the LA on 2 March 2015. If you applied online, you will be able to view the result of your application on the evening of 2 March 2015 rather than waiting for your letter to arrive in the post. In addition, you will receive an email notifying you of the result of your application during that day.
Staff in the Council’s Contact Centre on the numbers below will be pleased to answer any queries you may have on the arrangements for your child’s transfer to secondary school.
